Last weekend, my hubby and I celebrated my birthday going to one of my favorite spots in Scottsdale, Pig and Pickle. I was turned on to this place by a chef of mine and man did it live up to the hype!
As you can probably guess, it has pig things and pickled things. But, this combo proves to be adventurous and imaginative with every dish. This place is a must try!
When you walk into the restaurant, you’re greeted with a casual, urban ambiance. The seating is spread out enough to where you don’t feel like you’re sitting on other guests laps which is a huge plus for me! Now let me tell you what we enjoyed there and I’ll provide a link for the menu so you can check this place out yourself!
We wanted to start off with an awesome appetizer to get ourselves ready for the amazing-ness about to go down (we had just come from seeing a movie and the subsequent adrenaline rush left us hungry!). We ordered the pulled pork tostadas. Oh my wow! The pulled pork was a delicious and succulent heap of yum on top of a crunchy tortilla with an amazing creamy and savory sauce. To top it off was a slightly pickled salad of cabbage. Oh my. We probably ate each of our tostada in two bites. I really did try to savor mine.
My husband got probably one of the most beautiful things (as far as fat kid food is concerned) on the menu. The Apocolyptic Sow. Basically a pork fest in between two delicious hamburger buns, with a requested side of the Peruvian Chainsaw mustard (haha!). With melted cheese and some house made pickles (of course), this was a thing of beauty and fat and just yum! The fries were nice and crisp and what a wonderful plate all around. He had his mind made up pretty quick when he looked at the menu.
As for me, well I had a harder time. You see, I had my gaze on both the Noodle bowl WITH an addition of pork belly, because hello pork belly. Or their take on a Bahn Mi. It had been years since I had a Bahn Mi and I wanted to revisit that great memory but I’m also a sucker for good noodles, veggies, and of course, a good pork belly. Our waiter wasn’t helpful at all when he said that he loved both of those items… Seriously! This was a crisis haha! But he did say that if it had been a while since I had a Bahn Mi, I needed to give it a whirl. And a whirl I gave.
My Bahn Mi was amazing! The French roll was absolutely fantastic, it came with a pork pate, some delicious sliced ham, and some of that amazing pulled pork similar to what I had on the tostada. All of that was topped off with a salad of sprouts, radishes, green onions and some cabbage. Oh goodness, it made my heart soar! And to top it all off, I got my pickle on the side! Though this isn’t like some dill pickle you’ve ever tasted, nope. It has a hint of curry to it which just makes your taste buds go crazy until you finally figure it out!
I opted out of the fries and instead wanted to experience their tater tots. I must say, this isn’t like your school cafeteria tater tots. Not in the least. These babies resemble potato croquettes in that they’re mashed potatoes, rolled into balls, breaded and then fried. They are phenomenal and I wanted more than just 3! Oh and it came with the spicy mayo dipping sauce; just let me go into a dark closet with those tots and sauce and carry on.
Now for dessert, of course we had to have dessert with it being my birthday and all, we ordered the Chocolate Almond Toffee Tart (neither pig thing nor pickle thing). Wow. Wow. Wow. This baby was incredible, ya’ll. The crust was not at all what I was expecting; not made from wheat flour, I’m suspecting oat or almond flour but it was a great texture nonetheless. On top of the amazing crust was this layer of toffee and almonds that was just so delectable. On top of that was a rich chocolate custard that was so smooth and soooo chocolatey (most importantly), I didn’t want it to end. To end it all, a nice vanilla whip cream was scooped on our tart slice and that’s all she wrote. The fat kid was happy to say the least.
Give this spot a try for your next brunch excursion or date night! Check out their menu here and let me know how you like it.
Happy eating everyone!
