My most favorite season of all is summer! It is the season of bright colors and super tasty foods. Hands down, I love summer! I will tell you this, though, I have not always enjoyed tomatoes. For the majority of my years, I have thought they were absolutely disgusting and it’s taken a lot of effort for me to be able to tolerate and somewhat enjoy tomatoes. Once I became acquainted with heirloom tomatoes, that revolutionized my whole tomato-eating experience.
I have an ongoing competition with myself as to which fruit I love the most. Peaches or watermelon. When summer comes around, I try to eat as much as possible of either one. I’ve been successful at eating my fair share each season. I love how the sweet watermelon really pairs well with the heirloom tomatoes. And the feta?! Watermelon and feta were destined for each other! The feta does a wonderful job of adding enough salt to the salad to keep everything interesting.
And don’t these colors just look awesome together?! You don’t need to feel like you need to get a yellow watermelon (but honestly, how cool are yellow watermelons?!). And since I loooooove making super colorful food, I went crazy with different colored tomatoes. There’s just something about in your face colorful foods!
I absolutely loved adding arugula to this salad because of the peppery taste it lends. It’s sharp and just cuts through all other flavors going on around it. I also added some fresh basil from my herb garden to this salad because it would also tie into the peppery flavor of the arugula. A good substitute for basil, if you don’t have any or don’t like basil, would be mint! Such a classic combo and I would applaud you for making that switch.
To keep this salad optimum for everyone’s enjoyment, I would wait to dress the salad until it was ready to eaten. If you felt like you were going to only eat some at a time, keep the vinaigrette in a separate container and dress as needed.

- ½ small watermelon medium diced
- 3 each heirloom tomatoes medium diced
- 2 ounces arugula
- ¼ cup fresh basil
- 2 ounces feta
- 2 ounces pepitas toasted and seasoned
- ¼ cup champagne vinegar
- ½ tablespoon Dijon mustard
- ½ tablespoon honey
- ½ cup EVOO
Whisk ingredients to vinaigrette together in a small bowl. Store in a small container until ready to use.
Carefully mix together all ingredients in a medium bowl, making sure everything was evenly mixed. When ready to serve, dress salad with vinaigrette and enjoy.
